ReOscar Worthy

Dear Mr. Robin Williams,

As you are no doubt aware, this Sunday evening the majority of the nation will be wrapped up in yet another Oscar ceremony. While we are no doubt disappointed that your turn as Wizard in August Rush did not earn you another nomination, we are still quite caught up in the fanfare of it all. As a result, we here at If I Blog It They Will Come have been reading all of the Oscars articles we can just so that we are well versed for the event.

One of the more shocking articles we read came from Time Magazine's Richard Corliss. In this week's Time Magazine, Mr. Corliss apparently had so much "Time" on his hands that he took it upon himself to redo the Oscars for 1998. The most distressing part of his re-examination of the events of ten years ago is that he stripped you, Mr. Robin Williams of your Best Supporting Actor win for Good WIll Hunting in favor of Burt Reynolds.

Now, we're all for taking a stroll down memory lane, we do it all the time, but the fact remains, there's no do overs as far as Oscar is concerned, especially when it's done with such flimsy reasoning as Corliss implies here by saying "every once in a while an Oscar goes to a comedian playing a serious role. That's the only explanation for Williams' win here," and with that a great performance is unjustly smeared. Mr. Corliss, the 1998 Oscar pool ended a long time ago and you obviously lost. How about giving a little credit where credit is due. I haven't seen Mr. Corliss so skillfully stalk a stage and keep people in stitches on such a consistent basis, nor have I seen him reach through the screen and tear an audience's heart to pieces.

Meanwhile Corliss' reasoning for his re-awarding the oscar to Reynolds is equally as paper-thin, stating "...Reynolds deserves an award for his enduring popular appeal. Sometimes the Oscars should be the Golden Globes." Really, we thought the Oscars were for honoring acting, not a popularity contest...though we did honestly like Reynolds as Jack Horner in Boogie Nights and think that he may have delivered one of the greatest lines in movie history in Woody Allen's 1972 film Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Sex * But Were Afraid To Ask.

In closing, we would like to state unequivocally that whether or not you ever decide to send us a photo of yourself looking at our blog to djayek@yahoo.com and despite our penchant for believing everything that we read, we would never so mindlessly agree with Corliss's perception, nor would we ever dream of revoking your Best Supporting Actorship.
Thank you for your time and consideration. We look forward to hearing from you soon.

Sincerely,
The Best Supporting Folks at If I Blog It They Will Come

A Little Mr. Brooks Inside All Of Us

Dear Mr. Costner,

In the most recent issue of Time Magazine, Richard Corliss wrote an article about good actors portraying villains in this summer's most anticipated movies. To nobody's surprise your portrayal of Mr. Brooks was one of the characters mentioned. You described the title character as someone with an " addiction he's trying to keep under wrap" and that "in life, when we see somebody trying to beat something, we feel sympathy. There's humanity inside this hideousness."

We here at "If I Blog It They Will Come" can't help but feel that maybe there's a little Mr. Brooks inside all of us. We certainly have some connection to the character as you described him. Not in the way that we also feel like serial killers with alter egos played by an actor who starred alongside Geena Davis in The Accidental Tourist, but more so in that we have an addiction as well. Our compulsion is blogging every week day so that you might feel compelled to visit our blog. It is our hope that you are able see the humanity inside our "hideousness" that comes out in our incessant internet badgering, because the only way for us to "beat" this thing is for you to "feel sympathy" and send a photo at yourself looking at our blog to djayek@yahoo.com.

Addiction can be a brutal thing, Mr. Costner, but we're sure that through understanding and great care we can beat this thing...together. Thank you for your time and we look forward to hearing from you soon.

Sincerely,
The Folks at "If I Blog It They Will Come"
